More than 400 vehicles drove through the parking lot of Valley First Credit Union at 15th & J Streets in Modesto October 10 and left 14 tons of documents to be shredded for free.

A spokesperson for the local Better Business Bureau, chief sponsor of the event, said the Modesto shred event was the largest of the five the BBB has held over the past three years.

The Modesto event was the kickoff of a national Secure Your ID Week which will culminate with sites across the United States and Canada shredding documents for free. Collectively the sites saw nearly 13,000 vehicles filled with 710,000 pounds (355 tons) of materials for shredding last year.

MidCal Better Business Bureau was joined locally by Valley First Credit Union and Pacific Shredding, a division of Pacific Storage, as sponsors of the event.

“BBB and our partners are providing identity theft prevention solutions for consumers and business owners with easy-to-use services and programs like BBB “Secure Your ID” Day,” said Frank Whitney, president and CEO for MidCal BBB. “None of us can afford to take a passive approach to identity theft – the issue requires action. BBB plans to continue helping communities guard against ID theft with similar shred events in the future.”

Education is one of the most important ways BBB works toward building trust in today’s marketplace. Going forward, BBB plans to continue providing expert advice to protect consumers and business owners from the ongoing threat of ID theft through a variety of offerings.
